Used Piaggio Parts

Our technicians at Sun Coast Cycle Sports in Odessa, Florida process salvage Piaggio scooters and three-wheelers, inspecting each component before it is photographed, cataloged with a unique SKU, and offered with complimentary domestic shipping. Piaggio scooters have a loyal following among urban commuters, but the U.S. dealer network for the brand is thin compared to the Vespa side of the Piaggio Group portfolio, and parts pricing through authorized channels tends to be steep for what are relatively simple machines. Our salvage inventory covers Piaggio BV 250, BV 350, BV 500, MP3 (250, 400, 500), Fly 50, Fly 150, Typhoon 50, Typhoon 125, Liberty 150, and related platforms. Because Piaggio shares parent company ownership and significant engineering with Vespa and Aprilia, understanding the platform relationships across these brands is critical for sourcing compatible used components.

Piaggio model overview

Piaggio and C. S.p.A., headquartered in Pontedera, Italy, is one of the largest scooter and small-vehicle manufacturers in the world. Founded in 1884 as an industrial equipment company, Piaggio entered the two-wheeled market in 1946 with the Vespa, which became the most iconic scooter ever produced. Today the Piaggio Group encompasses multiple brands including Vespa, Piaggio, Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, and the former Derbi and Gilera lines. In the U.S. market, Piaggio-branded vehicles are positioned as practical, commuter-oriented scooters, while the Vespa brand occupies the premium lifestyle segment. Both are distributed through the same dealer network operated by Piaggio Group Americas.

The MP3 three-wheeled scooter platform is Piaggio's most distinctive product, using a patented articulating front suspension with two front wheels that lean into corners like a conventional two-wheeled scooter. The MP3 is classified as a motorcycle in most U.S. states but can be ridden without a motorcycle endorsement in some jurisdictions due to its three-wheel configuration. For used parts buyers, the MP3's front suspension and steering linkage represent the most complex and expensive assemblies to replace, and salvage is often the only affordable source for these proprietary components.

ModelYearsEnginePlatform notes
MP3 250 / 400 / 5002007-2018250cc / 400cc / 500cc liquid-cooled singlePiaggio's tilting three-wheeler. The patented dual-front-wheel articulating suspension allows the MP3 to lean through corners. The MP3 250 uses the Quasar 250 engine shared with the Vespa GTS 250. The MP3 400 and 500 use larger-displacement versions of the same engine family. Front suspension linkage, tie rods, and wheel hub components are MP3-specific and extremely expensive through dealer channels. The MP3 500 shares its engine with the Piaggio BV 500 and the Aprilia Scarabeo 500, and internal engine components interchange across these models.
BV (Beverly) 250 / 350 / 5002005-2018250cc / 350cc / 500cc liquid-cooled singleGrand touring scooter with large wheels (16-inch front, 14-inch rear) for improved road handling. The BV 250 uses the same Quasar engine as the Vespa GTS 250 and MP3 250. The BV 500 shares its engine with the MP3 500. Frame, bodywork, and suspension are BV-specific, but engine internals, CVT components, and some electrical parts interchange with corresponding MP3 and Vespa GTS models of the same displacement.
Fly 50 / Fly 1502005-201550cc / 150cc air-cooled singleCompact urban commuter scooter. The Fly 150 uses the same engine platform as the Vespa LX 150 and Aprilia Scarabeo 150, and engine components interchange across these Piaggio Group models. The Fly 50 uses a two-stroke (early) or four-stroke (later) 50cc engine. Bodywork is Fly-specific but some electrical switches, brake components, and CVT parts are shared with other Piaggio Group small-displacement scooters.
Typhoon 50 / 1252010-present50cc / 125cc air-cooled singleEntry-level sport-styled scooter. The Typhoon 50 is one of Piaggio's most affordable offerings in the U.S. market. Uses a simple air-cooled engine with CVT. Some engine and CVT components are shared with the Piaggio Fly and Vespa Primavera in corresponding displacement classes. Bodywork is Typhoon-specific.
Liberty 1502016-present155cc air-cooled single (i-get engine)Modern commuter scooter featuring Piaggio's i-get (Italian Green Experience Technology) engine platform. The i-get 155cc engine is shared across multiple Piaggio Group scooters including the Vespa Primavera 150 and Vespa Sprint 150. Engine internals, CVT components, and some electrical parts interchange with any i-get-equipped model. Bodywork and frame are Liberty-specific.

Common failure points and frequently replaced components

MP3 (all variants, 2007-2018): The tilting front suspension is the MP3's defining feature and its most maintenance-intensive system. The articulating linkage, tie rod ends, and front wheel bearings require periodic inspection and replacement as the dual-wheel configuration places unique stress on these components. Linkage bushings wear faster than conventional fork bushings due to the complexity of the tilting mechanism. The electronic parking lock (which holds the MP3 upright when stopped) is a known failure point, and a failed lock can leave the vehicle unable to stand without support. Replacement parking lock actuators are expensive through dealer channels.

BV 250 / 350 / 500 (2005-2018): The larger-wheeled BV platform develops front fork seal leaks at similar intervals to a conventional motorcycle, which is unusual for a scooter. The CVT belt on the 500cc variant wears faster than the smaller-displacement models due to the higher torque loads. Coolant system hoses on liquid-cooled BV models deteriorate in hot climates (particularly relevant for Florida-based machines) and should be inspected for swelling and cracking.

Fly 150 / Liberty 150 (2005-present): CVT belt and roller wear is the primary maintenance item. The Fly 150 shares its engine platform with the Vespa LX 150, and the same failure patterns apply: variator bushing wear causes belt tracking issues, and the drive belt should be replaced proactively rather than waiting for failure, as a broken belt leaves the scooter immobile. Starter motor failures are reported on higher-mileage Fly and Liberty units, particularly those stored outdoors where moisture infiltrates the motor housing.

Typhoon 50 (2010-present): The 50cc two-stroke variants (early production) consume more oil and foul spark plugs more frequently than the four-stroke versions. Electrical system simplicity means fewer failure points, but the CDI ignition module is a known weak spot on early Typhoon models. Bodywork is fragile and cracks easily from even minor tip-overs, making replacement body panels the most commonly needed parts for this model.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Can I use Vespa parts on my Piaggio scooter since they are the same company?

In many cases, yes. Piaggio and Vespa share engine platforms within the same displacement class. The Piaggio BV 250 uses the same Quasar engine as the Vespa GTS 250. The Piaggio Liberty 150 uses the same i-get engine as the Vespa Primavera 150 and Sprint 150. Internal engine parts, CVT components, and some electrical items interchange between Piaggio and Vespa models sharing the same engine platform. Bodywork, frame, and model-specific trim are never interchangeable between the two brands.

Q: Do Piaggio MP3 front suspension parts interchange with any two-wheeled scooter?

No. The MP3's patented tilting dual-front-wheel suspension is entirely unique to the MP3 platform. The articulating linkage, tie rods, wheel hubs, and front brake system share no components with any two-wheeled Piaggio or Vespa model. Engine and rear drivetrain components from corresponding Piaggio BV or Vespa GTS models may interchange with the MP3, but the front end is MP3-exclusive.

Q: Are Piaggio and Aprilia scooter parts compatible?

Some are. The Aprilia Scarabeo 150 and Piaggio Fly 150 share the same engine platform, and the Aprilia Scarabeo 500 shares its engine with the Piaggio BV 500 and MP3 500. Internal engine parts, CVT components, and some electrical modules interchange between Piaggio and Aprilia scooters of the same displacement that use the same engine family. Frame, bodywork, and brand-specific components do not interchange.

Q: What is the Piaggio i-get engine and which models use it?

The i-get (Italian Green Experience Technology) is Piaggio's current small-displacement engine platform, featuring improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and electronic fuel injection. It is used across multiple Piaggio Group brands: the Piaggio Liberty 150, Vespa Primavera 150, Vespa Sprint 150, and other 150cc models. All i-get-equipped scooters share internal engine components and CVT parts regardless of which brand badge is on the bodywork.
