Sun Coast Cycle Sports carries inspected used parts for the 2009-present BMW S1000RR, BMW's race-bred inline-four superbike that rewrote the performance expectations for European sportbikes. The S1000RR spans four distinct generations, each with significant engine and chassis changes: Gen 1 (2009-2011, 193 hp), Gen 2 (2012-2014, 193 hp with HP4 variant), Gen 3 (2015-2018, 199 hp), and Gen 4 (2019+, 207 hp with ShiftCam variable valve timing). Understanding your generation is critical for parts compatibility. Every component from our S1000RR donors is evaluated at our Florida facility, photographed under a unique SKU, and shipped free across the continental United States.
S1000RR generation and parts compatibility

| Gen 2 | 2012-2014 | 999cc inline-4, DOHC, 4-valve | 193 hp | Updated bodywork, electronics; HP4 variant (DDC semi-active suspension) |
| Gen 3 | 2015-2018 | 999cc inline-4, DOHC, 4-valve | 199 hp | Lighter frame; ride-by-wire; 6 hp increase; optional DDC; Brembo brakes |
| Gen 4 | 2019+ | 999cc inline-4, DOHC, ShiftCam | 207 hp | ShiftCam VVT; symmetric headlights; Flex Frame; 4 kg lighter; M1000RR variant |
Each S1000RR generation represents a significant redesign. Body panels, fairings, and many chassis components do NOT interchange across generations. Within each generation, parts interchange well across model years. The Gen 4 (2019+) ShiftCam engine is a fundamentally different design from the Gen 1-3 engines and shares no internal components with earlier generations.
The S1000RR shares its engine with the S1000R (naked, 2014+) and S1000XR (sport tourer, 2015+) of the corresponding generation. Engine internals interchange between the RR, R, and XR within the same generation. The R and XR use detuned versions of the RR engine. The S1000RR does NOT share engine parts with any BMW boxer, K-series, or F-series model.
The Gen 4 S1000RR (2019+) spawned the M1000RR (2021+), BMW's first M-branded motorcycle, with carbon fiber bodywork, winglets, and a further-developed ShiftCam engine. The M1000RR shares most mechanical components with the Gen 4 S1000RR but adds M-specific carbon bodywork, forged wheels, and revised electronics.
Common S1000RR failure points and replacement parts
Fairing damage (track and crash): The S1000RR is frequently used for track days and racing. Fairing damage from crashes, track contact, and vibration-induced cracking is the most common parts need. Generation-specific fairings are not interchangeable.
Shift rod and quickshifter sensor (Gen 1-2): The quickshifter sensor on early S1000RR models can develop faults, causing missed shifts or false neutrals during aggressive riding. Sensor replacement restores reliable clutchless shifting.
Switchgear corrosion (all generations): Some owners report corrosion of the left handlebar switchgear, particularly on bikes exposed to rain or humid storage. Replacement switchgear assemblies are available.
Oil consumption (Gen 1-2, track use): S1000RR engines used aggressively on track can consume oil at a higher rate than street-ridden machines. Oil level monitoring between track sessions is essential.
Coolant system (track use): Sustained high-RPM track use stresses the cooling system. Coolant hose condition, thermostat function, and radiator cleanliness are critical for track reliability.
Commonly replaced S1000RR parts
- Fairing panels (crash damage, generation-specific)
- Quickshifter sensor
- Switchgear (handlebar controls)
- Brake pads and rotors (track wear)
- Chain and sprocket set
- Rearsets and clip-on handlebars
- Exhaust system (aftermarket popular)
- Windscreen
- Coolant hoses
Frequently asked questions
Q: Are parts interchangeable across S1000RR generations?
Generally no, for body and chassis components. Each generation (Gen 1: 2009-2011, Gen 2: 2012-2014, Gen 3: 2015-2018, Gen 4: 2019+) has different fairings, frames, and many chassis parts. Within each generation, parts interchange freely. The Gen 4 ShiftCam engine shares no internals with Gen 1-3 engines.
Q: Does the S1000RR share engine parts with the S1000R and S1000XR?
Yes, within the same generation. The S1000R and S1000XR use detuned versions of the S1000RR engine. Engine internals interchange across all three S1000 models of the same generation. The R and XR use different ECU calibration and possibly different cams for their lower power outputs (160-165 hp on R, 160-165 hp on XR).
Q: Is the M1000RR compatible with the S1000RR?
The M1000RR (2021+) shares most mechanical components with the Gen 4 S1000RR (2019+). Engine, gearbox, frame, suspension geometry, and many chassis parts interchange. The M1000RR's unique components are its carbon fiber bodywork, winglets, forged wheels, and M-specific electronics calibration. For mechanical parts, a Gen 4 S1000RR is a compatible donor for the M1000RR.
